Project: Sketchbook

So far with my project I haven't been very happy on the direction I've been going, or able to come up with something that I think will be both commercially appealing and something I like as well. My tutor has advised me to come up with two different ideas for a final piece: one commercial idea and one 'Emma' idea - what I would want to do if there were no limits.

Research: Dissertation

For my dissertation, I am writing about 'Land Girls' of the 1940s and the representation of women from this time.

Being both a lover of vintage fashion & design and a self-proclaimed feminist, I thought this subject would be perfect for me to write about.

My initial research is photographs of Land Girls.

Inspiration: Art Therapy Book

On visiting my friend today, she showed me a beautiful book she had been given which was an art therapy colouring book. After having a look through all the wonderfully patterned, detailed drawings, we then spent the afternoon colouring in and watching cheesy 90's films!

Incredible addictive as well!



Personal: Commission Research

I have been asked to draw the most beautiful Saluki hound for a client who would like her beloved pet tattooed on her leg. The client has asked for the image to be full of texture and to capture Cai's 'whispy' fur, especially at the ends of the ears.

She sent me this most lovely photo of her dog's ears, showing the different textures between the long and short fur.

Research: Art Deco

Today I found Lemongrab in a Art Deco postcard from 1908!



Personal: 1st Birthday

Today marks the one year anniversary since I started working from home as a freelance illustrator. Prior to setting up Emma Pryce Illustration I'd never had much confidence in my abilities as an artist, but the reaction, encouragement, support and interest I've received over the past year has been amazing. Plus the experience helped a great deal with my placement for my final year of university, where this time next year I'll have a degree in what I love doing, and hopefully another wonderful year of illustrating will be done and dusted!

This illustration is what started me on my journey as a freelancer. It's hard work, but I've enjoyed every second of working for myself over the past year and hope that, one day, that will be how I can make my living.

Project: Summer Brief

Over the summer, we were asked to create four illustrated envelopes and post them to our tutor to celebrate the history of the Post Office and the postage stamp.

Here are my pieces:

 

 

They are now on display in the foyer of the college campus along with other students' work.

Research: Murals

Our first and current project at university is to create a mural for the Butter Market, which is an indoor market in Hereford High Town. As a group, we have been designated four walls within the market to decorate with our own design.

Today I have been researching existing murals and large scale bodies of work.
